3. Tack back toward the same lay line or continue across the rhumb line so as to
be astern and to windward or dead to windward of the majority of
competitors.
4. Continue to cross from side to side of the rhumb line than the majority of
competitors or significant competitors.
5. Keep alert to the possibility of a persistent shift (watch other boats and
compass) and tack toward it immediately after its detection.
LATE IN WINDWARD LEG
1. Tack to be ahead and to leeward of the majority of competitors on or near
the lay line
2. Keep alert to the possibility of a persistent shift occurring in a zone at or just
beyond the lay line and assume or continue to tack towards it (if the
windward mark lies within it), over standing slightly if necessary to reach it.
REMEMBER
• The possibility of strategic gain is directly proportional to possibility of
strategic loss.
• Greater the separation greater the risk.
• Take the decisions based on results needed for the regatta or race.
• Bad series – high risk every race
• Good series – low risk to start followed by higher risk halfway through
• Great series – low risk/ conservative every race.
Successful racing to windward in persistent or oscillating shifts on short legs depends
on observing progress of competitors early in the leg.
• IF BOATS ON SAME TACK POINTING HIGHER – TACK! (unless tide over rides)
• IF BOATS ON OPPOSITE TACK ARE POINTING LOWER, I.E. GREATER THAN 90
DEGREES TO YOUR BOATS COURSE - TACK!
