Although the top boat in recent years internationally (Cirkelene), has a JM mast set up
with more pre-bend (heavy weather mast step setting in all weathers).

A good wooden mast (plus great team) is unbeatable (think Crackerjack and Tak), the
trick is finding a good wooden mast with enough stiffness and flex, where the luff
groove is straight as an arrow…. and then not breaking it!

Working from the North’s tuning guide as our base (8cms forestay sag and 131cms
from jib tack on deck to black marking on forestay) Madelaine’s measurements were
                                   th
as follows during Folkboat week: 4 hole back from the forward end of the mast step
plate; shrouds 4.3 on turnbuckles or 70 lbs on the luge gauge. This was our mid
     weather, F3 -4, setting.

In light airs the mast step is 5 hole back and two turns off the mid-weather setting
                               th
for the turnbuckles (mast more upright and floppy rig).

In heavy weather the mast step is 3 hole back and two to three turns on the mid
                                    rd
weather setting for the turnbuckles (mast has more pre-bend).
