STARTING IN LIGHT AIR
        1. Start at the end of the line and/ or away from other boats – on starboard
from the port end, tacking to port from the starboard end – moving away
from the fleet and away from the rhumb line.
        2. Continue to tack until a return tack toward the rhumb line to cover will
provide clear air across the mass of the fleet.

     IN MODERATE AIR
        1. Start at one end of the line but close to other boats – on starboard from the
starboard end, on port or tacking onto port (asap) from the port end, moving
            toward the rhumb line.
        2. Continue the starboard tack from starboard end or port tack from port end
until upwind of the opposite end of the line. From this vantage point evaluate
the distribution and heading of competitors to determine which tack to
            continue on.

     IN HEAVY AIR
        1. Start away from other boats, usually at a moderate distance from the upwind
end of the line or in the middle of the line when the favoured side of the
course is in doubt (to avoid necessity of early tack) – moving at maximum
speed – to obtain clear air away from the rhumb line.
        2. Continue the initial tack until the majority of the fleet is on the opposite tack
or until halfway to the lay line.

EARLY IN WINDWARD LEG IN ALL WINDS
        1. Watch other boats (and other wind indicators) at the extremities of the
course to detect the appearance of a persistent shift.
        2. Watch the compass to detect if a shift beyond the range of previous
            oscillations is occurring.
        3. Tack immediately toward any persistent shift revealed (1) or (2).

     LATER IN THE WINDWARD LEG
        1. Tack back toward the rhumb line at or prior to halfway to the lay line.
        2. Assume such a tack back toward the lay line to be ahead and to leeward of
the majority of the competitors who were previously on the same tack
(between them and the rhumb line).
