Folkboat International Cup in San Francisco
The San Francisco Bay Folkboat Association (SFBFA) hold a biennial international
regatta for Nordic Folkboats in San Francisco Bay. Held during September / October,
usually a fleet of about 20 boats take part. The SFBFA generously invite National
Associations of the various European fleets to send crews to compete in this regatta.
The selected visiting crews are required to take their own sails to San Francisco, once
they are there, they draw lots for a boat supplied by SFBFA. Set against the dramatic
backdrop of San Francisco, the standard of racing is excellent in this popular event
and the hosts (SFBFA) are very hospitable.
The UK National Folkboat Association is usually offered one place in the Folkboat
International Regatta. The winner of the previous year’s Nationals is normally asked
whether they would like to attend, and an invitation for other crews to put their
names forward is made at the UK Folkboat Association AGM in March. If there are
more crews expressing an interest in taking part, than there are places available, the
National Committee will determine who goes to the Regatta. They will take into
consideration the performance of the crew at other international and UK events since
the previous Folkboat International Cup. In addition, if needed, local events from
around the UK along with the consistent participation of the crews involved will be
considered. The successful crews are expected to commit to the Regatta by the end
of May. Crews are expected to self-fund.
