Chris has fixed a wooden batten known as a ‘ribband‘ to mark the sheer line which
represents the top edge of the top plank. The Nordic Folkboat’s sheer line is known
amongst boatbuilders, marine architects and boat owners as one of the most elegant
on the water.
Including the garboard, which is the lowest bottom most plank, Nordics have 16
planks each side. To ensure that each plank has the same width at each station, a
planking scale is used and the plank widths marked on each mould. The planking scale
depicts the width of each plank at each station. Obviously, the planks taper fore and
aft and are at their widest at station 8.
