Lentune Island by Chris Fox
On a crisp and bracing morning at the end of February, 2 regular Solent Folkboat
sailors (Fox and Ryley) and a wife (Alison) with a camera, went to investigate the
rumours that an Island had appeared between Mark A and Hurst castle. On arrival
they found a shingle bank and as they happened to be carrying a spare mast and
Royal Lymington flag, the brave wife came out of the cabin into the cold, took a
picture of the sailors raising the flag and in a rambling speech the chap called Ryley
named the discovery Lentune Island
Realising that many a Folkboat and other less beautiful craft might end up on the
island as the position was still a secret, they sent the details to the Lymington Times,
only to then be bombarded by press interest from TV, papers and radio. Without
saying another word, the story appeared everywhere and after much consultation,
Ryley agreed to be interviewed by Radio 5, introducing the listeners to ebbing and
flooding tides and other sailing terms to confuse. However, when pointing out the
Island was named after the original Roman name for Lymington rather than himself,
they concluded that Ryley was indeed a humble man with the good of all sailors at
heart.
