Due to Covid restrictions, there was plenty of pre-planning, tests, and documentation
to complete, which at the time seemed like a real faff but helped us sail through
customs out and back.

We hitched Madelaine up at Berthon 0345 on Wednesday 27 October and set off
ahead of the traffic, if not the lorries. With an overnight stop in the luxury of a hotel
(we normally sleep in the car!) at the Dutch/ German border town of Venlo, we

arrived refreshed in Berlin on Thursday 28 October at 1430 hours. Our crew, Cy
Grisley and Andy Baker, flew in on Thursday and we relaxed for the evening at our
hotel, sharing our limited knowledge of lake sailing and the weather forecast for the
regatta, amongst other chatter.
Saturday race morning – all visiting Nordic folkboats launched, rigged and afloat
Madelaine was launched Friday morning; we went for a tune up and reconnaissance
trip in the afternoon on Lake Wannsee while Liesa did a bit of sightseeing in Potsdam
(the bridge of spies!) and had a well-earned rest.
This regatta has been running for 49 years and it showed in the race management,
with starts away promptly at 1000 on both race days, windward leeward Olympic
