Chairman’s Report - Matthew Jones
When looking back to the 2016 sailing season I feel it was overshadowed by the
loss of our good friend Bernard Turner. It cannot be overstated how much Bernard
contributed to the success of the Folkboat Class as secretary of the International
Association, committee member of our National Association and a driving force
behind the organization of Folkboat Week at the Royal Solent YC. He sailed his own
boat Woodpecker right up to the time he could no longer get on board. Bernard will
be greatly missed.
Last year saw the usual big events in the Folkboat sailing calendar:
• The RTI was very windy. Well done to five Folkboats who finished in the Folkboat
Class and congratulations to Stralende who came first. Also commiserations to Ed
Donald in IRC who lost his mast at St Catherine’s, about the worse place on the
course, and had to have a long tow home.
• The ever popular Royal Solent YC Taittinger Regatta was won by newcomer Svane.
• Folkboat Week was ably organized by David Fox and sponsored by Lymington
Yacht Haven and while not having as many entries as last year was a great success
with Madelaine winning the Open Division and Folkdance the Cruiser Division.
• Finally the Folkboat Nationals held at Lymington attracted 17 entries and was won
by Tak.
