FALMOUTH FOLKBOAT FLEET 2016
2
016 proved to be another great season for the Falmouth Folkboat Fleet
with an additional boat joining the local fleet along with good sailing
breezes, excellent racing and plenty of silverware. Racing in the Harbour is
dominated by Club Racing at either Flushing or St Mawes, the annual village
regattas, Falmouth Week and some pursuit series run using either IRC, Byron
or a local system known as FAY. The Folkboat is ideally suited to racing in the
harbour and the fleet gets excellent results in the racing.
Our newest fleet recruit is Aries (GBR737) purchased by David Mitchell and
who is a member at Flushing Sailing Club. David is converting from racing
a Solo dinghy at Papercourt Sailing Club to a Nordic Folkboat in Falmouth
Harbour – a good move. David is getting to know the boat, the nuances of
the Harbour and which beers to drink and achieved a second place overall
behind Gap Year in a handicap fleet during Falmouth Week.
The Carden family plough their yachting furrow out of St Mawes Sailing Club
on Pickle (GBR670) and won the early handicap series against a large mix of
boats racing under the infamous FAY system. In amongst junior sail training,
football, pets etc. Pickle is a difficult boat to beat when the Folkboats get
together.
Aurora (GBR719) helmed by Mandy Owens and crewed by Dave Owens
and various others who could be dragged off the street had a good season
winning two series at Flushing Sailling Club, plus doing well in the Village
Regattas with a win and two second places but were only able to sail two
races during Falmouth Week.
Len, Teresa and Annie Trenoweth had a strong season in 2016 in Gap Year
(GBR705), winning two series at Flushing Sailing Club, won Flushing Village
Regatta, won the inter-club large pursuit race series and won their class in
Falmouth Week. Plenty of glasses and silverware in their household. With a
new set of North Sails they will be the transom to aim for in 2017.
2017 hopefully promises to be a strong season starting on 1st April with the
regular sailing being added to with a middle of the estuary mini-series to
produce the Falmouth Harbour Folkboat Champion. Interest in the Folkboat
continues and we hope to convert more sailors over this season. Let us know
if any of you come cruising down this way during the season.
